New 2024 Cyber Security Breaches Survey released

April 17th 2024

The Department for Science, Innovation & Technology has published the annual Cyber security breaches survey. The survey highlights the year-on-year changes to cyber security breaches across different sectors, business sizes and type of breaches.

The new data shows 50% of businesses and 32% of charities report having cyber security breaches or attacks in the last 12 months. Like previous years, this is higher among medium-sized businesses (70%) and large businesses (74%).

This year sees a rise in breaches across sectors, with 32% of businesses and 24% of charities reporting breaches or attacks comparatively.

The report advises charities and businesses to practice ‘good cyber hygiene’ stating, ‘The most common cyber threats are relatively unsophisticated, so government guidance advises businesses and charities to protect themselves using a set of “cyber hygiene” measures.

One important way care providers can ensure they’re practising good cyber hygiene is by completing the Data Security Protection Toolkit (DSPT). The DSPT is a free, online self-assessment of health and social care providers’ data security and protection policies, procedures and processes.

The Better Security, Better Care programme is the official programme offering free support to care providers to complete the DSPT, offering free resources including policy templates, guidance and in-person support.
