As the festive shopping season kicks off, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and Action Fraud are reminding everyone to stay alert to the growing risk of online scams. New figures reveal the serious financial toll cybercrime can take during this busy time, along with some simple tips to help keep shoppers safe.
Last year, UK shoppers lost over £11.5 million to online scams during the festive period, with each victim losing an average of £695. The most popular targets for scammers were clothing and technology with much of the reported fraud happening on social media and online marketplaces, with people aged 30-39 making the most complaints.
Many care services – especially care homes – will be ordering gifts and items online for the festive season. So this advice is useful for all of us.
Four steps to stay safe
To combat these threats, the NCSC has launched a nationwide campaign under the Stop! Think Fraud initiative which encourages consumers to take simple but effective measures to protect themselves.
- Setting up multi-factor authentication (MFA): Even if your password is compromised, the extra layer of security can help to keep your account safe.
- Learn to recognise scams: Scammers often try to rush people by using time limited deals or claiming items are nearly sold out, so you act quickly without thinking.
- Cards over bank transfers: Use credit cards for online purchases where possible, as they offer better protection.
- Research sellers: Look up reviews on reliable websites to make sure the company or seller is legit.
The government is backing the campaign, with Fraud Minister Lord Hanson saying:
“We are delighted to support initiatives like this, through the Stop! Think Fraud campaign, which provide practical, actionable advice to the public to stay safe from scams.”
